Adopting Gracie - Our Truths!

In honor of National Down Syndrome Awareness Month, I felt it was time to finally get this post out on our truths of adopting a child with Designer Genes!

I have been reluctant as for I know that older child adoption can be difficult for many and not all children with Designer Genes have been as easy as Gracie has been to add to our family. But it is our truth and I want the world to know how blessed we are to be Gracie's parents. Sure there are times when consistency and firm boundaries are needed, but it is part of the wonderful Gracie-cakes adventure!

In fact, we have seriously considered adding another one with rocking designer genes, but my truth is I want Gracie all to myself. I don't want to share her genes with another.  Selfish I may be, but I love her having her own special place in our family. She fits absolutely perfectly!

We can't imagine not a second without her. She starts our days with smiles and ends our days with the most sincere and authentic love that we have ever experienced.

Truth is........Gracie Rocks!!!

Truth is ........Her Designer Genes make her Rock even more!!!

Truth is.......She is going to change stereotypes of not only Down syndrome but special needs adoptions!!

Truth is .......She is adorable beyond words on this blog can convey!

On the way to school the other morning, Lu and I were talking life and she looked at me and said, "You can't help but be happy when you are with Gracie."  It is GRACIE TRUTH! God made her perfectly just the way she is! She blesses all who meet her.

She is smart!

She is funny!

She is happy!

She is sensitive!

She is obedient!

She can be stubborn in a way that is stinkin' adorable and makes me want to chase her and pinch her  ever so adorable buns!

She is thankful!

She is easy smeasy to please!

She is heavenly!

She is perfect!

She is the daughter of the King of Kings!

She is mine to love here on earth!

Truth is......I am humbled to be her mommy!

Gracie's First Day of Real School!

Gracie started regular kindergarten yesterday.

Beyond Yummy this girl!!

We are blessed to have one of my dearest friends (a credentialed teacher whom I met when she was Bryson's aide) as her personal assistant.
It's a total God thing! Didn't request her, just got her!!

My sweet friend texts me photos and captions during the day letting me know what Gracie is up to!!
And let me tell ya, it is all good stuff!
She is fitting in beautifully!
She LOVES school!

Here she is at PE today! Loving life to the fullest! Participating just like every other kid in the class!

The only difference is this sweet hunk of love knew nothing about a family's love until seven months ago!

The yummy delicious little one has not had all the life experiences that many of her peers have taken for granted for their five wise years on earth!

And yet, look at her now!!!

Sending mama some loving via a text!
We are so incredibly proud of our girl with designer genes!

Amazing Accomplishments!

I probably don't even need to say a word as these two videos say it all!!
Don't forget to pause music at bottom of the blog!

As a special education teacher, I love seeing her understanding concepts of print, that she is tracking and self-correcting when she reads. To her credit the "a" in the second book that I have just introduced is not the font that she is familiar with.
Yes, she is learning to read by sight right now, but that is just fine. She is getting confidence in reading. Once she knows all her letters and letter sounds, we can begin phonetic reading.
But Lordy Lordy she has only been home six months!

Gracie is taking swimming lessons and has learned how to float (amongst other things)!
She wants to do everything, I mean everything the others do!
So the other day, we were sitting outside in our jammies writing in our journals.
Gracie calls me over to show me that she wrote her name all be herself
Gio's and tried to write Marissa's making a W instead of a M (common error for all new writers mind you)!
Tears were running down this mama's face!
I am so proud of her!

Can I tell you what an incredible feeling it is to know that she has a full life, a life with meaning, a life with opportunity now that she has a forever family? To know that we are a part of creating this life for her is the best feeling EVER!!!!
And why we are hopelessly in love with adoption!!!
So it only gets better with the name writing! She realized she didn't have Bryson's name wrote down. She says, "Oh sorry Bryson, sorry sorry Bryson!" (Go ahead and insert extreme cuteness, Gracie Cakes style here)

And proceeds to form a perfect B!!!!!
The fact that she knows what all their names begin with is amazing to me, let alone that she is independently writing them!!!

Does she have all this language and writing stuff mastered? NO, but is she off to a great start? Indeed!!!

She attends Marissa's dance school on a daily basis
has learned some very suh-weet moves!

Next post will be on OUR truths of Down Syndrome adoption!
Is it really as great as this blog makes it appear?
There must be some downsides to all of this, right?
Would you do it again?

Six Months

It has been six months since this precious cupcake walked up to me and said "Ni hao Mama!"

It has been six months since I fell deeply in love with a designer gene cupcake!

It has been six months of designer bliss with this little one! Just look at her transformation from orphan to  beloved daughter, sister, niece, granddaughter, cousin and cupcake!

Meeting Gracie-cakes!
 Instant Love!

In her mama's arms forever!

Six months later!!!

 With family that adores her!
And she adores especially when ice cream is involved!

Living the life that God intended for her!!!

I promise to post soon all the accomplishments of Gracie in the past six months!
There are simply too many to fit into this post!
Let's just say she is Amazing Grace!

Just a little procedure today

Sweet Gracie-cakes had so much impacted hard wax in her ever so tiny ever so cute Designer Gene ear canals (a DS trait) that she had to go under a general anesthetic today in the hospital to get it removed. After the procedure, the doctor reported there was no way of removing it in the doctor's office as it was as hard as a stone digging into her ear drums. Poor thing suffered so much a week ago with them trying to remove it in the office after weeks of ear drops to no avail! We are hoping that it might lower her sometimes louder than then average adorable gruff voice!

Let me just tell ya that she stole the show and nurses were arguing over who gets the cupcake as their patient! She was deliciously yummy! Just take a peek for yourself what 100% pure cuteness looks like even in a hospital gown!

She told them the socks were beautiful!!!

Okay, now here is the true "after" picture that I would say is pretty darn cute as well. I actually had to leave the room after the photo OP as I was cracking up laughing. This is what she looked like when she was told she could not swim for one week! Yes, those are real tears from a real automatic faucet!
She's yelling out "NO Fair!"
That's her latest and newest saying "No fair!"

Yep, that's how I kind of felt this morning too at daybreak with only a half a cup of coffee in my veins driving down to the hospital in Sacramento with all the early bird commuters!

Future Economist We Have Here!

A little blurry, but grabbed my phone quickly to take it as I wanted to introduce to you our future Economist! This is one of Gracie's favorite books right now. She is always reading it.  Just think all of our world economy problems just might be solved if we put Gracie Cakes in charge of the economy!

Look who has pierced ears!!!

She was so brave waiting to get them pierced.

Gracie has been asking to get earrings like the rest of us girls in the house. She is so responsible with her glasses that I figured she would be fine with pierced ears.

Truly, she cried less than 15 seconds and she LOVES them. She was going up to women in the mall showing them her "beautiful earrings". It was so cute!!

Terms of Endearment!

Hubby is head over heels in love with Gracie. He told me the other night he would adopt another one just like Gracie and then turns to her and says, "Do you come in a double scoop?"

Joe thinks Gracie is so smart that he tells people she is just faking her diagnosis!
He makes me laugh!

Gracie continues to thrive and do incredibly well.
She loves being back home after our three week stay in Philly.
She makes us smile!
She makes us laugh!
She is so endearing!
So loving!
We are so lucky to be her family!

Where's Gracie???

She's been keeping her brother Bryson company at the RMH in Philadelphia while he gets medical treatment there!
She calls home and checks in with papa every now and again! She actually misses home terribly and sometimes gets emotional talking to papa. It is very sweet. She tells everyone we are going home on Saturday. Oh how I wish!!!
She's been busy making new BFF's!
She has even traveled to our Nation's Capital!
Taking her own pictures of the Capital
Gracie continues to amaze me and everyone who meets her. She is often putting 5-6 words together, mostly in English but adds in her Chinese when she needs to really get the point across!!!

All the doctors and nurses at Shriners are smitten with her and know her by name. It is pretty cute!

She rubs Bryson's head and tummy telling him "It's okay Bryson!" It is the sweetest thing EVER!
